Program Note
What will happen after the last fire is lit, the last glacier melts, and the last pig is slaughtered? These are not just questions for the future; they are a haunting reflection on our present. Everything deteriorates. The air thickens with smoke, the oceans rise, and the land becomes barren. The cries of a penguin, a pig, and a child blend together in the all-too-unnatural demise of the planet. The consequences will not only affect the human race, but all of existence. Until only distant and indistinguishable sounds remain in their deformity, and the earth becomes nothing more than a star.
The sounds of the earth are memories of a pain that is no more. My idea for Natura Mutilata (Mutilated Nature) is to explore the connection between human intervention in nature and its mutilation. Part of electro-acoustic composition is the transformation and the mutation (also referencing Roads, 2015). This led me to wonder how I could depict the progressive mutation and destruction of the Earth through a progressive mutation of the sound material. To do this, I mainly thought about concrete material: glaciers, burning forests, animals screaming. I then decided to process this material in various ways.
The composition is mainly influenced by the morphing techniques of Trevor Wishart and Ryuichi Sakamoto. From the late Japanese composer, I was inspired by his technique of field recording with the glaciers melting: “the sound of snow from pre-industrial times / melting snow from when the earth was earthier. The purest sound I’ve ever heard” (excerpt from documentary “Coda”, 2017). I started from this quote and found out that that same sound will eventually be the sound of mutilation.
In this composition, divided into three parts, the ending is completely transformed, leaving us with a rotten world. These elements, through spatialization, surround the listener in an unsettling atmosphere.
